Book Detail

The Female's Encyclopaedia of Useful and Entertaining Knowledge; comprising Every Branch of Domestic Economy. Illustrated with Thirty-Five Beautiful Engravings by M.U.Sears.

Heading EARLY DOMESTIC ECONOMY BY ANONYMOUS FEMALE WRITER

ANON.

London by W.J.Sears, 1830.

Sole edition, Roy. 8vo., woodcut illustrations in text, some light foxing, vi, (7) -440pp., printed in double column, in original cloth as issued.

Exceedingly rare. No copy listed in Copac, and the only copy we can find located is at the New York Public Library. This title offers a comprehensive guide for the benefit of 'young ladies' and is of special note in its early usage of Domestic Economy as a proprietory term predating the landmark treatises by Beecher (1841), Beeton (1861) and Stowe (1869), of which this was a fore-runner. Although published anonymously, the author was female.
